My Favourite Time of Year
I love the month of October. There is so much to see and do. First Bathurst 1000 and Indy. Keep reading this IS the Craft Column. Then at the end of the month we finally get our turn to attend the Craft & Quilt Fair. This year’s Craft & Quilt Fair runs from October 24 – 28 at the Brisbane exhibition Centre, South Bank.

Then at the end of the month we finally get our turn to attend the Craft & Quilt Fair. This year’s Craft & Quilt Fair runs from October 24 – 28 at the Brisbane exhibition Centre, South Bank.
On Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd of October they hold special hands on classes by expert tutors. These classes run for an extended time frame to give participants time to learn new skills and techniques. There are limited places available so visit the website to book http://www.craftfair.com.au/ If you can’t make these 2 days don’t despair. The expert tutors are available for Workshops and Craft Circles throughout the main exhibition days.
As well as a large number of vendors’ stalls the Craft & Quilt Fair offers an opportunity to visit displays from various craft guilds. As usual the Queensland Quilters Inc hold their annual Quilt Show. You will see work by members who are vying for prizes across 14 categories including first time quilters and school students. The Reddy Quilters, an art quilt group based at Redcliffe will not only display their art quilts but also demonstrate their techniques. I will be present at the Quilt Show for the presentation of the prizes. I have sponsored the Art Quilt category.
Also in October is an unusual exhibition of textile works inspired by the poems of John Shaw Neilson. The Neilson Collection – Weaving a Response, Textiles by Alvena Hall and Ursula Steele will run from October 7 – 21st.
Ursula Stehle completed a 3-year weaving diploma in Switzerland, and has since been giving workshops in both Switzerland and in Queensland. Ursula tends to create work that is relatively simple, with a complex look to it. Colour is a particular specialty, and her strong preference is for natural fibres. Alvena Hall’s work incorporates hand dyed cotton and organza, indigo shibori, mono-prints, hand, machine and digital stitch.The exhibition is at Gallery 159, 159 Payne Rd, The Gap. Ph: 3300 6491
