Vintage Christmas Crafts by Sara Toliver (745.59412 TOL)

If thoughts of Christmas evoke childhood memories of family traditions then you will love this book. The author has separated her ‘Vintage” theme into five categories: Country Vintage, Chic Vintage, Shabby Vintage, Victorian Vintage and finally Simply Vintage. The decorating projects range from the very simple through to more complicated. For example Country Vintage starts with stacking a large glass vase with baubles and finishes with a row of chipboard houses. The instructions are clear and the author has endeavoured to use items from around the house or at least easily sourced. Even if Vintage is not your Christmas theme you can easily take the projects and modify them to suit. This book is worth a look.

Creative Smocking by Chris Rankin (746.44 RAN)

I’ve got to say from the outset that I can’t smock and have never really been interested in learning, until now. The Smocked Christmas Baubles on the front cover had my attention from the outset. The author gives extremely clear information about fabric and thread types, preparation of fabric and pleating. By the time I had finished reading this chapter my head was spinning with ideas. I did slow down long enough to read the chapter on Stitches and Techniques. While clearly illustrated and explained it made me realize that the baubles may have to wait until next year. There are other projects included and a wonderful gallery section. Smocking is now on Next Years List.

Bargello by Brenda Day (746.442 DAY)

If you are not yet ready to embrace Christmas have a look through this book. Not a Christmas decoration to be seen. Although some of the projects would make great presents. The author has taken a very traditional needlework technique and given it a fresh modern look. Check out the Zebra Cushion!

The smocked decorations sound interesting. Must see if my library has a copy.
