The Crafter's Way 8

Each week I write a craft column for the North Lakes Messenger. I share it with bloggers once it has been published.

There are a number of craft exhibitions on show throughout April & May. Object & Action and 50 Brooches are soon to finish. Both are on at Craft Qld. Be sure to visit their gift shop while you are there.

Object & Action - Textiles by Loani Lee Craft Qld 381 Brunswick St Valley 12 April – 3 May Well established textile artist Loani Lee creates hand stitched quilts to exquisite detail. The artist analyses the unique and highly expressive drawings of life as seen through the eyes of Bridget, her granddaughter. “My work is essentially abstract, yet it has a relationship with the natural world. I typically use a landscape format and unconsciously the lines and rhythms I create imitate such things as hills, water and rock formations.” Through the process of stitching, she acknowledges these naive yet honest visual stories and in turn reinvents them. She confirms the notion that all art is derivative and that innovation is usually achieved through reinvention.

50 Brooches – Craft Qld 381 Brunswick St Valley 12 April – 6 May
50 Brooches was selected via a national expression of interest sourcing a diverse range of practitioners and their works. The selected works reflect excellence in contemporary craft and design. Popular perceptions find the brooch often hidden away in Nanna’s vintage jewellery box. By presenting fifty new works as fascinating, refreshed and reinvented wearable art works 50 Brooches raises the profile of this timeless accessory.
