The Crafter's Way 3

Each week I write a craft column for the North Lakes Messenger. I share it with bloggers once it's been published

The Pine Rivers Shire Council Library at Pathways has a wonderful variety of craft books to borrow. Many of these books are recent releases. Borrowing craft books from the Library is an inexpensive and convenient way to learn a new craft. The Pathways Library is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday 9.00am – 5.00pm. Thursday 9.00am – 8.00pm. Saturday & Sunday 10.00 am – 3.00 pm.

Community Quilts by Karol Kavaya and Vicki Skemp(746.46 Kav)

With a subtitle “How to Organize, Design and Make a Group Quilt” my first reaction was just another quilt book.

This book certainly is a standout amongst quilting books. Yes! The book provides instructions on quilting. What it does that is different is that it discusses the benefits and pitfalls of making group or community quilts. It also provides hints on streamlining the process. With many quilting groups involved in making charity quilts this section will provide valuable insights.

The best aspect of this book is the section that chronicles over 20 years of group quilt making. Every quilt has a full-page colour photograph, a description of group process involved and comments from both quilters and the recipient. Many of these brought a tear to my eye. Well worth a look, even if you are not YET a quilter.

FREEformations: Design and Projects in Knitting and Crochet by Jenny Dowde (746.43 Dow)

If you are ready to experiment with your knitting and crocheting, this book could be just the inspiration you need. Book includes clearly written instructions, project ideas, colour theory and principle of design. If your crocheting and knitting skills are a little rusty the author has included a “how to” section. Worth a special mention is the instruction for hairpin crocheting, amongst the best I’ve seen. This book will give you an excuse to use up all those bits of yarn you’ve hoarded over the years.
