The Crafter's Way 17

I write a weekly craft article for a local paper. I reproduce it here each week.

The Pine Rivers Shire Council Library at Pathways has a wonderful variety of craft books to borrow. Many of these books are recent releases. Borrowing craft books from the Library is an inexpensive and convenient way to learn a new craft. The Pathways Library is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday 9.00am – 5.00pm. Thursday 9.00 am – 8.00pm. Saturday & Sunday 10.00 am – 3.00 pm.

Box Frame Magic by Lizzie O’Prey with Helen Atkinson (754.594 OPR)

Box Frames or Shadow Boxes are an alternative way to display photos, memorabilia or your favourite treasures. The first section of the book outlines the equipment and materials needed to make box frames. While the list is extensive do not be put off. Many of the items in this section are offering you options. The next section gives you the skills and techniques for making the frames. Again there are number of options, from very easy to more complex. The last part of the book is project ideas. Very clear photos assist the written instructions. You can easily mix and match projects with a frame that matches your skill level. Box Frame Magic may give the scrap booker ideas for their next gift.

The Art of Illumination by Patricia Carter (745.6 CAR)

Patricia Carter is foremost a miniaturist artist who has developed an interest in illumination. Illumination is an ancient skill traditionally used in conjunction with calligraphy. The ideas in this book can be used in many crafts with little or no modification. The book has design ideas, simple exercises for you to develop your skills and some templates. Illumination requires very little in the way of equipment and materials. The beginner can start with very few basic items, pens, pencils and paper. How refreshing to find a craft that isn’t going to cost a fortune to start up!

Earlier in the year I featured North Lakes resident Sharron Tancred and her new art venture – Works For Your House. Sharron has now launched her website, go to
www.worksforyourhouse.greatgraphicaladventures.com to see what she can do for you.
